PILOTING / COASTAL NAVIGATION CLASS

Your bucket list is probably no different than anybody else’s…when it comes to sailing. As inland lake sailors, we all dream of sailing to Catalina Island, then maybe the San Juan’s in Puget Sound, followed by some Caribbean adventures and maybe even something exotic like Tahiti, Croatia or New Zealand. Actually the list is endless, but the voice in the back of your mind whispers “are you up to it?”

A basic understanding of getting from point A to point B, is pretty important if you’ve got a float plan you want to follow. Sure, a GPS will do the job nicely. In fact, a nice GPS should be on the top of any sailor’s wish list. If you haven’t already heard the never-ending argument about GPS vs. chart work, you will shortly.

Join us for some entry-level chart work and learn the mechanics of latitude / longitude and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinate grid systems. We will start out with the interesting history of how Eratosthenes computed the Earths circumference, then we’ll use those deductions to compute great arc angles, time zones and longitude locations. No GPS is going to tell you where in the world you need to go, to become a Golden Shellback. We’ll discuss converting True to Magnetic and back again. Variation, deviation and other compass basics will be covered. Distance / Speed / Time scenarios will be posed, using marine charts for problem solving. DED Reckoning and the Running Fix will also be considered. Learn about the tools of navigation: dividers, compass, parallel rules, pelorus, handheld and bulkhead compass, station pointer and more. Navigation is a skill that is developed through constant application. Come on out and find yourself.
